Ottawa to Host 2009 National
Mystery Conference
Ottawa, August 2008 – Canada's capital just got more dangerous. For three action-packed days, Ottawa will play host to mystery writers, agents, publishers and fans from across Canada and the United States. Bloody Words, Canada’s premier mystery conference, is coming to Ottawa for only the second time, June 5-7, 2009.
Highlights of the conference will include panels of mystery authors discussing their books, the writing process and the publishing industry, while RCMP officers, private detectives, psychologists and forensic experts will deliver sessions on the intricacies of crime, criminals and detection. Author readings by the best in the mystery-writing genre will be held in English and French and will be open to the public.
The lineup of confirmed mystery authors is world class. Denise Mina, award-winning Scottish mystery writer, will be the international guest of honour. Denise’s first novel in her Garnethill trilogy entitled Garnethill won the John Creasey Dagger for best first novel. In her Paddy Meehan series, The Field of Blood won the 2006 Barry Award while The Dead Hour was nominated for a Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Award. The series follows the life of journalist Paddy Meehan through the 1980s and into the 1990s as she covers stories and uncovers murderers in Glasgow, Scotland. Denise also has written comics, plays, short stories, and stories for the BBC Radio and television.
Louise Penny, former CBC reporter and Canadian Guest of Honour, is an international bestselling author who has received numerous prestigious awards for her Inspector Gamache series. The first in the series Still Life won five major awards, including the John Creasey Dagger and Canada’s Arthur Ellis Award. Her second novel Dead Cold won the Agatha Award for best novel while her third The Cruellest Month debuted at number one on the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association’s bestsellers list. Louise writes about murder in the fictional town of Three Pines, evoking the atmosphere and beauty of a small Quebec town.
The MC for Bloody Words 2009 is Ottawa’s award-winning Mary Jane Maffini – popular author of three separate mystery series that feature fast-paced plotting and comic crime. Mary Jane’s Ottawa-based character Camilla MacPhee was recently optioned for television.
